Rags & Richie’

Dare Academy is a competition run by Abertay University which brings six teams of students to design a game. We were mentored by Industry members and given advice on how to improve our game is a different area.

We then travelled to EGX London 2023 to present our game to the public and other industry members.

I competed in Dare Academy 2023 with my five other friends and presented our game ‘Rags & Richie’, which was extremely well received by the public and other industry mentors who really want us to expand and release the game.

What is ’Rags & Richie’?

‘Rags & Richie’ is a game about a travelling merchant named Rags and his pet hamster named Richie. They travel from town to town selling items to needy customers to fund his retirement. The world has fallen into turmoil so finding specific items is very difficult, so customers are willing to pay extra to obtain these items.

The game is extremely light-hearted, humours and designed with the intention of being extremely accessible and quick to pick up and enjoy. As a team we feel like we achieved this as the public was able to quickly grasp and understand the game and its controls and have great fun, even if they haven’t played many games before.

My role within the team was ‘UI / UX & Animations’ which was a drastic change from my previous role as a level designer. I learnt a lot of different skill sets and understanding of using UI to enhance the overall user’s enjoyment and understanding of the gameplay. I was then able to bring this knowledge to improve my other level design projects whilst also gaining a huge interest in UI / UX Design and Accessibility.
